Richard Serra - Band

acquisition fund

Extending their passion for collecting, Eli and Edythe L. Broad earmarked 10 million dollars of their 60 million dollar gift to LACMA for further acquisition of contemporary art. With these funds, 3 works have been acquired: Alighiero e Boetti’s Mappa, 1979; Richard Serra’s 2006 sculpture Band; and Chris Burden’s Hell Gate, 1998, acquired jointly with The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). Made by Afgan artisans, Boetti’s Mappa is a large tapestry showing the constantly evolving surface of the globe’s boundaries, representing each country by its national flag. Considered by many to be one of the most innovative works of Serra’s prestigious career, Band is 70 feet long, 12 feet tall, and took over 2 years to complete. The work is on display from Feburary 16, 2008 in the inaugural installation of BCAM, as is Burden's Hell Gate, 1998, a 28 foot long reconstruction of New York City's Hell Gate Bridge fashioned from Erector and Meccano toy parts.
